Education Grants by
M. L. Pinkard, educator
Character
education grants are available in the United States for character education
programs in schools. An eligible school may apply for a grant to design and implement
a character education program. Two conditions apply: (a) The program must be able
to be integrated into classroom instruction and be consistent with state academic
content standards and (b) The program must be able to be carried out in conjunction
with other education reform efforts.
Character
education grants are a benefit of the No Child Left Behind Act. Previously,
only state education agencies (SEAs), in partnership with local education agencies
(LEAs), were eligible. Under NCLB, SEAs and LEAs are eligible to apply. The grants
are from the Fund for the Improvement of Education, Office of Educational Research
and Improvement. |

The
U.S. Department of Education provides more information on character education
grants at their web site: http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml. Character
education grants are offered by individual states as well. Michigan offers
the "Michigan Model Partnership for Character Education: Grants to support
the development, evaluation, and dissemination of model character education." Character
education grants in Arizona are designed to implement Senate Bill 1172. The
purpose is to provide "a state matching grant of $1500 to any public or charter
school that teaches a character education curriculum pursuant to ARS, Section
15-719. The curriculum selected by the schools must be an age-specific, stand-alone
curriculum which addresses at least five of the character attributes as identified
in the enabling legislation. These attributes are attentiveness, caring, citizenship,
compassion, diligence, discernment, forgiveness, generosity, gratefulness, initiative,
orderliness, respect, responsibility, sincerity, trustworthiness, virtue, and
wisdom." Character
education grants may be available in your state also. Contact the local superintendent's
office to get the ball rolling. | |
